Did You Know? Rugby Has Its Own Talking Newspaper

Helping people stay connected with their local community for more than 47 years

For more than 47 years, Rugby Talking Newspaper has been helping people stay connected with what is happening in and around Rugby.

Every week, a dedicated team of volunteers turns local news into something you don't have to read.

You can simply listen.

Originally established to support people with sight loss, the service can also help older people and others who find reading newspapers or printed news difficult.

It provides something wonderfully simple but incredibly valuable — a friendly voice bringing you news and stories from your own local community.

Local news. Local voices. Completely free.

Each week, volunteers select and record news from local sources to produce a Talking Newspaper specifically for the Rugby community.

Listeners can keep up with local news, events and stories from around the town, helping them remain connected with the community around them.

And importantly, the service is completely FREE.

There are several ways to listen, including online, using a smartphone or tablet, through compatible smart speakers, or through the Talking Newspaper's free memory-stick service.

A wonderful presentation at our October meeting

At our monthly meeting on 1st October, Rugby Rokeby Lions were delighted to welcome representatives from Rugby Talking Newspaper.

We were treated to a wonderful presentation explaining how the Talking Newspaper is produced, the work carried out by its volunteers and, most importantly, the difference the service can make to its listeners.

It was fascinating to hear about an organisation that has been serving our town for so many years and to learn more about the volunteers who give their time each week to keep people connected with Rugby.

Rugby Rokeby Lions are proud to support them

Following the presentation, Rugby Rokeby Lions were delighted to present Rugby Talking Newspaper with a cheque for £500 to help support their continuing work in our local community.

Supporting local charities and community organisations is an important part of what we do.

The money we raise through our events and fundraising activities enables us to put that support back into Rugby and the people who live here.

But our support doesn't have to stop with a cheque.

We can also help spread the word.

Could someone you know benefit?

There may be people across Rugby who would benefit from Rugby Talking Newspaper but simply don't know that the service exists.

Perhaps it's a parent or grandparent who no longer finds reading the local newspaper as easy as they once did.

Perhaps it's a friend or neighbour with impaired sight, someone recovering from illness, or somebody who simply finds reading printed material difficult.

Or perhaps it's someone who would simply enjoy hearing local Rugby news, read by local people, every week.

If somebody comes to mind while you're reading this, please tell them about Rugby Talking Newspaper.

Sometimes, helping someone stay connected with their community can be as simple as giving them something familiar to listen to.
