Young Leaders in Service

Young Leaders in Service

Recognising young people who give back to their community.

The Young Leaders in Service Award — known as YLiS — is an internationally recognised Lions programme that celebrates young people aged 11 to 18 for the community service they carry out over a 12 month period.

It can run alongside other schemes you may already be involved in — including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, V-impact and V-inspire — as a separate achievement in its own right.

The three award levels

Hours completedAward
25–49 hoursBronze Seal Award
50–99 hoursSilver Seal Award Certificate
100+ hoursGold Seal Award Certificate

Every Young Leader receives a certificate, a congratulatory letter from Lions Clubs International, and a YLiS pin or cloth badge — presented at a dedicated celebration event.

Why does it matter?

For many young people it's simply the satisfaction of knowing they've made a difference. But YLiS also brings real, tangible benefits:

  • Builds confidence and a sense of community
  • Internationally recognised — respected by colleges, universities and employers
  • A powerful addition to any UCAS personal statement
  • Connects young people with their local community and Lions Club

What counts as community service?

Almost anything that helps others. Some ideas:

Helping elderly residents with errands, odd jobs or companionship. Collecting food, clothing or toiletries for those in need. Environmental work — planting trees, clearing litter. Helping younger children in the uniformed organisations, sports teams, library duty at school etc, or helping within the family where there is a member with special needs or a disability.  Mentoring or helping someone learn to read.

If you're already volunteering in any capacity, those hours almost certainly count.

How to get involved

It's simple. You keep a logbook — provided by us — recording the date, the activity, how long you spent, and who supervised you. At the end of 12 months your hours are totalled and your award is presented.

Schools, organisations and individuals are all welcome. If you're part of a group, your group leader can submit hours collectively.
